The Healthy Communities Program at SomaliCAN utilizes the Unified Health | | Communication Approach and consists of the following components:
Community Health Literacy: health literacy information on disease prevention, access to primary care, healthy eating, active living, stress reduction, prescription access, patient advocacy, and language assistance.
Provider Services: Cultural Competency Training, Somali Interpretation and Translation and Advice on Resolving Specific Issues with Patients. Providers contact us for mediation on issues ranging from not being able to convince patients to follow treatment recommendations to asking for clarification on a cultural or religious issue.
Healthcare Reform: SomaliCAN is actively participated in the campaign for healthcare reform to achieve quality coverage for more people. Included in this advocacy work is also the Partnership for Prescription Access, a network of over 20 local healthcare and social service agencies to achieve access to medication for the needy under the leadership of the Columbus Neighborhood Health Centers.
